Let’s get to know our Speaker,  Kelli Johnson

Kelli serves as Deputy City Manager for the City of Greeley, Colorado, where she provides executive leadership for Community Development, Housing, Homeless Solutions, Culture, Parks and Recreation, Government Affairs, Communication and Engagement, and Economic Development.

Throughout her career with the City, she has either held direct oversight responsibility for, or worked extensively alongside, nearly every municipal department, providing her with a broad understanding of local government operations, strategy, policy, budgeting, organizational development, and service delivery.

With more than 20 years of public-sector leadership experience, Kelli has led complex initiatives involving community development, downtown revitalization, housing strategy, economic development, organizational transformation, public engagement, crisis communications, capital projects, and intergovernmental partnerships. Kelli prides herself on her ability to align people, processes, and resources to achieve organizational goals while navigating complex public-sector challenges.

Kelli holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations and Journalism from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Development. She is an Emergenetics Certified Associate, a graduate of the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center LEAD Program, and is a graduate of the prestigious Harvard University’s Public Sector Executive Education program.

We enjoy discovering fun and interesting tidbits about our speaker, her family and hobbies, etc.

Kelli says: “I’ve called Greeley home for the past 17 years, but my connection to Weld County goes back much further. As a kid, I was heavily involved in 4-H, which meant spending countless summer days at Island Grove Regional Park, where I participated in everything from horseback riding and archery to shooting sports, leadership development, and even furniture refinishing projects. Looking back, those experiences taught me many of the same lessons that still guide me today—discipline, responsibility, problem-solving, public speaking, and a commitment to continuous learning. It’s pretty special that I now have the opportunity to serve a community that helped shape so many of my own childhood memories.

My husband and I have deep roots in this area—he’s an Eaton native—and we’ve proudly raised our son here. Family is at the center of everything I do. Our son is now 16, and we’re in one of my favorite seasons of parenting. He’s a dedicated runner, and you’ll often find me on the sidelines cheering him on at meets, celebrating his accomplishments, and enjoying every moment of watching him grow into an incredible young man.
When I’m not working, there’s a good chance you’ll find me camping somewhere in Colorado (or beyond) with my family. We spend much of our summer in our camper exploring new places, hiking, unplugging from technology, and enjoying the simplicity of campfires, mountain views, and quality time together. Some of my favorite moments are the quiet ones—sitting outside with a cup of coffee, journaling, reflecting, and appreciating the stillness that can be hard to find in a busy world.

My family also loves to travel. Last summer we spent three weeks exploring Europe together, creating memories and experiencing cultures, history, and places that reminded us how big—and connected—the world can be.

I’m also a bit of a food enthusiast. I genuinely enjoy cooking, especially when I have a plan and a new recipe to try. It’s not unusual for me to spend part of a weekend meal-prepping, searching for recipes, or testing something new in the kitchen. Pair that with a good audiobook, and I’m pretty happy. These days audiobooks are my preferred way to read, usually while driving between meetings or on road trips.

One thing many people don’t know about me is that I love helping other people grow and succeed. Whether it’s mentoring emerging leaders, encouraging women in their careers, or helping someone navigate a new challenge, I find tremendous fulfillment in supporting others. I’ve always been a driven person—from my days in 4-H and athletics to my career in local government—but that drive has always been rooted in a desire to contribute, add value and help others reach their potential.

One thing that surprises people about me is that I’m a planner and organizer to my core. I genuinely find joy in helping friends and family tackle everything from cluttered closets to overflowing pantries and chaotic spare bedrooms. While some people unwind with a spa day, I apparently relax by color-coding storage bins and finding better uses for shelf space. My family jokes that I have a hard time walking into a disorganized room without mentally creating a plan to fix it.

Over the years, I’ve even gifted organization projects to new moms and family members as my version of helping out. It’s not unusual for one of my sisters to call and say, “My guest room is out of control. Want to come over?” and for me to respond with an enthusiastic “Absolutely!”

I’ve come to realize that my love of organization isn’t really about closets or containers—it’s about creating order, reducing stress, and helping people feel more successful in their environments. That’s probably why I enjoy leadership so much, too. Whether it’s helping an organization, a team, or a pantry function better, I love creating clarity and bringing a little harmony to the chaos. If local government ever stops being fun, I could easily see myself pursuing a second career as an executive coach, a professional organizer, or maybe some combination of both.
