Greeley Creative District – Be Curious!
July 3 @ 7:45 am - 10:00 am
$38.00Becky Safarik, Board President, Greeley Creative District
This Workshop will offer a brief overview of the origin of the Greeley Creative District as an independent non-profit. Plus you will learn its unique association with local and state government agencies, a bit about its 17-member board, and an overview of its annual programs and services. The audience will also learn about the Guiness World Record that it holds, how its work applies to all Greeley residents, and hear about some exciting ambitions the District has undertaken to level up its support of our local Creatives and community.
Creative Districts came about as part of a Statewide initiative in 2012 and Greeley was among the first to compete for the limited districts recognized, earning that distinction in 2014. Greeley is now one of just 30 districts in the state. Becky is one of the founders of this District, having served in a leadership capacity since its inception.
Becky will hand-out information about 2 upcoming free community workshops about selling yourself as a creative and how to find your creative family/support system. NorCoWIB participants will also hear about an end of summer Taste Tour of the District (one of two annual fundraisers), the annual Día de los Muertos celebration and the District’s contribution to Downtown Winterfest. In addition to attending the events, volunteers are especially appreciated to help support their success.
- Three key points you will gain / take away following this Workshop:
- Creativity is integral to every part of our lives and not confined to visual and performing arts
- Learn how to embed an expectation of creativity into your work and everyday life to become an agent of change
- Discover how you can support local creatives, makers and add to your quality of life as a sponsor or supporter of any number of Greeley Creative District activities.
Becky Safarik retired (for a second time) last year from the City of Greeley after serving 45 years as the Community Development Director and Deputy City Manager, responsible for new development and urban renewal functions, Poudre Trail, neighborhood services, and a variety of community engagement activities. She has served on numerous local boards and commissions over the years and is one of the founders of the Greeley Creative District.
She arrived in Greeley to attend UNC over 50 years ago and unexpectedly found her second home here. Her first job, in her later college years, was as director of the “SLYB” campus/community Suicide Prevention Hotline, which is where she met her husband, Roger DeWitt (…no, he was not one of the callers…). They have two grown children and an abundance of pets that seem to think they are their children also.
Becky co-authored the book “Bears in the Backyard” with Mary Borg and Ron Edgerton. With support from Deb DeBoutez, Peggy Ford Waldo and Elizabeth Kellums; it’s a story about how the city and university grew up together. All proceeds from the book go to the Greeley Creative District.

Your generous participation with our Sister-to-Sister Pay-it-Forward philanthropy will benefit The Creative District and be coordinated by Heather Ingersoll, Hometown Insurance. The money will be used by The Creative District to provide free workshops to help creatives stay focused on their gifts and gain confidence in their journey to thrive as a creative. Members can share 1 business card + $5 or …3 Biz cards and $15. You decide how passionately you wish to donate in $5 increments, it’s your choice.
So often, those with creative ambitions are encouraged not to prioritize their talents and dreams, but to pursue other studies and jobs “as a backup.” Too often the backup becomes their only choice, and they become resigned and no longer follow their hearts or their passions become a side hustle. Others discover the world of creativity as a means of healing from wounds suffered in war, broken lives and hurts. Having a support system, information, and “Creative Sherpas” can help a person find their soul and thrive in ways completely unexpected. This is what we try to do through the Creative District…foster and support creativity as a way of life.
