Discover: An Important Link Between the Western Diet and Chronic Disease
August 7 @ 7:45 am - 10:00 am
$38.00Kelly Martinez, Public Health Communication Manager, Weld County Department of Public Health & Environment
This workshop will allow for a better comprehension of the Western diet and its associated nutritional behaviors, as well as the effects it has on an individual’s metabolism and health.
A Western diet characterized by high intake of energy-dense and processed food is a risk factor for many chronic diseases including diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. Much of the research focus is on the high intake of fat, sugar, and low intake of fiber and fruits and vegetables. One of the underlying mechanisms linking Western diet and chronic diseases is inflammation.
Kelly will bring age-appropriate screening information for girls/women at all seasons of life. In fact, she is generously bringing staff & equipment to do cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, and triglyceride screenings to the Workshop and those interested can take the test? We have 2 portable machines. It’s a great way to raise awareness of an individual’s current health status.
We will be providing two different screening options for folks on August 7th. If you are interested please fast from bedtime (10 p.m.) on for Option 1. Kelly advises those members who are interested in the screenings to drink lots of water the night before and the morning before the screening. It is sometimes difficult to collect enough blood for option 1 if folks are dehydrated.
Option 1: Lipid, Triglyceride, Blood Pressure and Triglyceride Screening – (requires 9 hour fast prior to screening and takes 8 minutes for results).
Option 2: Hemoglobin A1C screening (average blood glucose level over the past three months – best indicator for prediabetes / diabetes) – does not require fasting (5 minutes for results).
Option two requires just a drop of blood so it’s much easier to collect.
We will hopefully have two machines for each screening (four units total). Both screenings require a finger tip prick for blood collection. This service is FREE and incredibly generous of Kelly to facilitate for us. Remember business owners/employers, this is a FREE perk you can offer your staff…and customers. The health department is here to serve all Weld residents!
Three key points you will gain / take away following this Workshop:
1. The role of food in health and illness
2. Food related health – conditions
3. Low or no cost resources available to prevent or delay the onset of chronic disease.
